Amazon’s redesigned Kindle range gives readers three main decisions: pocket-sized portability, a larger monochrome screen, or color. The practical differences become clearer when the models are compared by price and accessory compatibility.

What the extra money buys

The entry Kindle has a 6-inch screen and 16GB of storage for $149.99. A $189.99 version adds an aluminum back and doubles storage to 32GB. Both retain the compact screen size. Amazon says the entry model opens books 30% faster than its predecessor; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test. Amazon’s US Kindle listing sets out the options.

The $199.99 Paperwhite costs $50 more than the entry Kindle. It has a 7-inch monochrome display, adjustable warm lighting and waterproofing. Amazon rates its battery at up to 12 weeks, based on half an hour’s daily reading with wireless off and brightness set to 13. That rating should not be read as 12 weeks of continuous use. See Amazon’s US Paperwhite listing.

Colorsoft starts at $289.99, a $90 premium over Paperwhite. Its 7-inch color display is relevant to comics, illustrated books and color highlighting. Amazon quotes up to eight weeks of battery life under its stated test conditions. For readers primarily buying text-only novels, the value of that color premium is a personal choice. See Amazon’s US Colorsoft listing.

Paperwhite Signature Edition costs $249.99; Colorsoft Signature Edition costs $319.99. Both add 32GB storage, aluminum housing, automatic front-light adjustment, double-tap page turning and contact-based dock charging. The upgrades cost $50 and $30 respectively, using the prices in Amazon’s US announcement.

Check accessory compatibility before upgrading

The $34.99 Kindle Click Bluetooth remote works with the new devices and Kindle models released from 2024 onward, according to Amazon. Existing owners may therefore be able to add remote page turning without replacing their reader.

The $79.99 Page-Turn Cover and $59.99 Charging Dock have narrower compatibility: the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft Signature Editions. These accessories are sold separately. Amazon lists their prices and compatibility in its accessories announcement.

Availability depends on region

Amazon’s US announcement lists the entry Kindle and aluminum version as available, with Paperwhite and Colorsoft preorders rolling out. It does not specify their US shipping day.

Amazon Japan’s October 1 release separately gives November 11 as the planned shipping date for its new Paperwhite and Colorsoft models. That is a Japanese schedule, not a confirmed US delivery date, and Amazon says planned dates can change.

Prices are Amazon’s announced US starting prices for the 2026 range, checked October 2, 2026. Specifications and performance claims are attributed to Amazon; GlobeBriefly has not hands-on tested these devices.
